4 Factors To Consider Before Buying Baby Clothes
It’s hard not to smile when shopping for your little one’s clothing. The onesies, jumpsuits, and other items seem designed as much to bring a chuckle from you as to be worn by your infant. But, there are plenty of obstacles on the way to stocking her wardrobe with cute clothes that last awhile. Here’s a quick list of four important things to think about when you’re shopping for baby clothes.
#1 – Tread Carefully With Size
Babies grow quickly. It’s not uncommon for a newborn to outgrow her onesies within the span of a few months. In fact, some babies grow so fast that moms and dads can only put an outfit into the wash a few times before having to retire it. It’s a good idea to buy clothes for your little one that are a little too big for her. She won’t mind the fashion gaffe as long as she’s comfortable. Meanwhile, you’ll have a bit more time before needing to hand her clothing down.
#2 – Avoid Items That Must Be Hand-Washed
Surprisingly, a lot of parents fall in love with certain pieces that must be hand-washed instead of machine-washed. Be careful of this trap. Chances are, extra time will be a precious commodity in the future (and that’s assuming you can find any). Scrambling to spend time hand washing your baby’s clothes is likely to lead to frustration.
#3 – Layers Work Wonders
It’s usually better to stock your little one’s wardrobe with clothing that can be easily layered. That makes the changing temperatures easier to manage. For example, if it’s warm, lighter items that have been layered on top can be removed easily. If the weather is cold, those items can be put on quickly. Also, keep in mind that bulky is rarely good because your baby will probably be uncomfortable. Layering clothes will help solve that problem, too.
#4 – Don’t Forget The Footwear
First, buy socks in bulk. They have a way of falling off and becoming lost, so packing a few extra wherever you and your baby travel pays dividends later. Second, if you’re going to buy shoes for her (babies typically don’t need them), try to purchase them with a large opening for her feet. Putting them on may not seem like a struggle until you’re forced to do it in a hurry. Also, remember that an infant’s favorite pastime is chewing. Your little one won’t discriminate against her shoes.
Even though it’s fun to shop for baby clothes, it’s also easy to make mistakes that have a long-term effect. Buy a little big, avoid clothing that needs to be hand-washed, lean toward layers, and consider footwear strategically. If you do, the items will last without causing you a headache.
